President Brigham Young
The Symmetry Between Reduction and Exaltation
Journal of Discourses, 6:284-285; 10:175

We are inhabitants of a world of sin and sorrow; pain and anguish, every ill that can be heaped upon intelligent beings in a probation we are heirs to. I suppose that God never organized an earth and peopled it that was ever reduced to a lower state of darkness, sin and ignorance than this. I suppose this is one of the lowest kingdoms that ever the Lord Almighty created, and on that account is capable of becoming exalted to be one of the highest kingdoms that has ever had an exaltation in all the eternities.

In proportion as it has been reduced so it will be exalted, with that portion of its inhabitants who in their humiliation have cleaved to righteousness and acknowledged God in all things. In proportion to our fall through sin, so shall we be exalted in the presence of our Father and God, through Jesus Christ and by living the righteousness of his Gospel.

Elder Bruce R. McConkie
The Importance of the Atonement in Relation to Eternal Marriage
The Promised Messiah, Book 1, p.152

The gospel covenant was not and could not be put into force and operation without the death of Christ. Except for his atoning sacrifice there would be neither immortality nor eternal life. If there were no atonement, there would be no forgiveness of sins, no reconciliation with God, no validity to baptism, no eternal marriage, no sanctified souls. If there were no atonement, the purposes of creation would have failed. The gospel covenant would have had "no strength at all" without the death of the testator.

The Making of a Celestial Kingdom

Creation

World quickened by the presence and power of the Father

Man and woman created in the likeness and image of God, enjoying His powers of life with no imperfections and no death, but unable to progress or work righteousness

Spirits in the pre-mortal world unable to come to earth to receive further training and advancement

Fall

World loses the presence and power of the Father

Man and woman expelled from the presence of God and excluded from accessing His powers of life.  Environment filled with imperfections, ambiguities, and eternal death

Spirits can be brought to the mortal environment and become living souls, but they can't advance because they are excluded from the presence of God.

Atonement

World quickened by the power of the Son and the presence of the Holy Ghost.

Men and women enjoy a limited measure of God's powers of life through the ministry of the Holy Ghost.  That allows progress and righteousness to take place.  Death and imperfections are annulled by the resurrection

Spirits now can advance to the point of being admitted back into the presence of the Father.
