Sections 31 thru 35
Counsel given to Brother Thomas B. Marsh: (31:9-12)
-
Be patient
-
Meek
-
Steadfast
-
Do not revile
-
Pray always
. Notice that about 4 and a half years
later Bro. Marsh would become the first president of the Quorum of the
Twelve Apostles in this dispensation. Yet, in accordance with the Lord's
way of revealing "line upon line," He said nothing about Bro. Marsh's future
calling or personal challenges
Mission to the Lamanites (32:2)
. The Elders had to travel over 1,400
miles (or 2,240 kilometers)
. Isn't this meaningful? Preaching
to the Lamanites (the House of Israel) early in the history of the church
(after 6 months)
A few people in the world still do good, but unfortunately
their doctrines (or philosophies) are wrong (4; see also 2 Nephi 28:14)
. Corrupt minds = minds trained in
doctrines and philosophies of men, not a necessary indication of evil disposition
. Like Elder Orson Pratt explained,
many of those who persecuted the Lord's true church thought they were defending
the pure gospel and kingdom of God (See "True Faith", contained in the
"Lectures on Faith")
Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight
(10)
. If we want a celestial kingdom,
we'd better build not physical roads, but inlets so that the power and
glory of God may flow into our character, our homes, our professional activities,
our worshiping activities, etc.
The Book of Mormon and the scriptures are given
for our instruction, but we will only get the most out of them by being
enlightened by the Spirit of the Lord (16)
An allusion to the Parable of the Ten Virgins (17)
"One eternal round": the opposite of "temporary linearity"
(1)
. There is nothing is new to the Lord;
no situation is unexpected or unforeseen. God doesn't have to wait to see
what is going to happen, because he knows the end from the beginning. He
is not limited by mortal constraints imposed by an imperfect linear mode
of thinking

To become one in Christ (2)
. To become a full participant in
the divine nature, biosphere, or macrocosm. In other words, to fully partake
of the powers of life that emanate from the presence of God (i.e. the light
of Christ at full luminance, or intensity), and experience the following
consequences:
. Know God's thoughts and experience
his feelings just as he himself knows and experiences them
. To have (or to produce) through
our own free agency those same thoughts and feelings ourselves
The weak things of the world: the unlearned and
despised (13)
. These terms are another heritage
of the saints in any dispensation. That means that in our days we have
a perhaps atypical situation, since collectively we have a high level of
educational attainment
. However, the Lord could also be referring
to what people say about our young and usually inexperienced full-time
missionaries
Thrash the nations
. Thrash: to separate the seeds of from the
husks and straw by beating; to beat soundly with or as if with a stick or
whip; to defeat decisively or severely.
Heavens to shake (24)
. See class notes for D&C 21:6
Zion to rejoice upon the hills (24)
. The hills were the places where
the Lord manifested himself to his prophets when temples were not available
