    The Word of Wisdom

    Historical Background
  • The Word of Wisdom, although revealed in 1833, only became a commandment 18 years later, in 1851  (read D&C Student Manual (2017), chapter 35; p.496)
  • However, as early as 1834 the prophet Joseph had established obedience to the Word of Wisdom as a requirement to hold leadership positions (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.117 footnote)
  • By 1876, there were still lingering questions among the recent converts regarding the use of coffee and tea  (Journal of Discourses)
  • The Word of Wisdom was reiterated by Pres. Joseph F. Smith in October 1908  (read about this in "Messages of First Presidency")
  • By 1930 it had become a requirement for temple attendance  (see entry in the "Encyclopedia of Mormonism")
  •
